Housing Rights is delighted to announce a significant boost to its work to empower and amplify the voice of private rented sector tenants, thanks to a generous £20,000 funding commitment from The Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS).

This vital support, provided over the next two years, will be used to amplify the voice of private rented sector tenants and gather crucial insights from them through running a series of tenant surveys. This will help to better understand the experiences and challenges of people renting privately in Northern Ireland. This data will be instrumental in advocating for informed policy changes and improving tenant protections.

The funding will also provide low-income tenants with bursaries to participate in Housing Rights’ training programmes. This initiative aims to empower tenants with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate their rights effectively and make informed decisions about their housing situations.

Natalie Whelehan, Head of Policy and Development at Housing Rights said,

"With this generous support from TDS, Housing Rights will be able to further advance its goal of supporting and empowering tenants.

We are grateful for TDS's commitment to improving the circumstances of people living in the private rented sector and look forward to the positive impact this funding will have on tenants' lives."

TDS’s contribution underscores its dedication to raising standards and to fair and equitable practices within the housing sector.

Eamonn Hunt, Head of TDS Northern Ireland said,

“TDS is pleased to support the work of Housing Rights in ensuring that tenant voices are heard and valued.

This funding will significantly enhance our collective efforts to strengthen the evidence base on those in the private rented sector and increase access to essential training for low-income tenants.”
