This training course is designed to empower and equip sector workers who have been identified as working with those at risk of homelessness with financial capability skills.

Key staff, who should avail of this training, include front line practitioners working in the community and voluntary sector, both in hostels and floating support teams. We have taken feedback from staff working in hostels specifically about the need for this course and adjusted course content on that basis.

This course is a proactive intervention. It will empower key staff who work with people at highest risk of homelessness with vital knowledge to prevent repeat homelessness and to sustain tenancies.

The main aims of the project are:

  • to ensure frontline staff and volunteers are empowered and equipped with knowledge which aids clients to be tenancy ready and able to access and sustain a tenancy in the private rented sector, preventing repeat homelessness
  • to empower staff and volunteers in key frontline organisations working with people at risk of and those experiencing homelessness, to deliver appropriate advice and support their clients on the housing issues arising from the rising costs of living and affordability issues, ensuring tenancies are sustained
  • to ensure that frontline practitioners have the knowledge and skills to help their clients access all relevant forms of Discretionary Support available, including but not limited to the most recent changes to Discretionary Housing Payments (DHPs), to sustain their tenancy and prevent homelessness
  • to support the financial awareness of key frontline staff and volunteers, to enable them to provide essential support to people at risk of and those experiencing homelessness to move into and/or sustain permanent accommodation
  • to ensure key staff feel confident about how to make referrals to Housing Rights’ specialist support, advocacy and mediation services to ensure tenancy sustainment and financial capability
